On the southern edge of the Alps rises the striking Monte Generoso with its &quot;Fiore di pietra&quot; structure designed by world-famous architect Mario Botta. The cogwheel railroad, which has been in operation for over 130 years, takes you from Capolago on Lake Lugano over a 9 km route to the 1704-metre-high summit.

Description

Discover the nature trail, the coal pile route or the planet trail. The planet trail is like a &quot;walk through the stars&quot;. The 600-metre-long path presents a planetary model of our solar system on a scale of 1:10 billion. The trail is also suitable for families with baby carriages.
You can combine your visit to Monte Generoso with a boat trip on Lake Lugano. A scheduled boat service runs once a day from Lugano to Capolago.

Capolago lies at the foot of Monte Generoso and is the starting point of the Ferrovia Monte-Generoso rack railroad. The parish church of Santa Maria Maddalena, the rectory with a beautiful fresco and the former Tipografia Elvetica are considered cultural assets. Capolago is a small village with less than 1000 inhabitants and is situated at 273 meters above sea level. The village is located at the southern end of an arm of Lake Lugano and is not far from Mendrisio. Literally translated, the place name Capolago means "at the head of the lake".
