Andermatt is located at 1447 m above sea level in a popular winter sports area. It is the starting point for snowshoe tours, ski tours, hikes and other outdoor activities. On the Gemsstock there is a freeride area, which is accessible from Andermatt by cable car. In summer, 500 km of hiking trails and 16 mountain huts await hikers. A popular excursion destination is the Schöllenen Gorge with the Devil's Bridge, which spans the raging Reuss River. The Bannwald forest above the village protects Andermatt from avalanches and has been strictly protected for centuries.
