The municipality of Simplon consists of several villages. Simplon village is located on the south side of the Simplon pass at 1476 m above sea level. The village has an authentic village center, which reminds with its buildings of Italy. Simplon is even classified as a place of national importance. The Simplon Pass leads through the narrow Gondo Gorge and was already used in the Stone Age. Today, some sections of the Gondo Gorge are lined with granite walls.
