Kandersteg is located in the Bernese Oberland at 1174 m above sea level at the end of the Kander valley. From the village there is a beautiful view of the Blümlisalpmassiv. Kandersteg has about 1000 inhabitants who still live in traditional wooden chalets. The municipal area also includes alpine parts and extends up to 3697 m above sea level at the Balmhorn. Kandersteg is the starting point for summer hikes of various degrees of difficulty. Very popular are hikes to Leukerbad, which lead over the Gemmi Pass.
