Einsiedeln is located to the south of Lake Zurich. The Sihlsee reservoir is located in the high valley in the municipality. A 33 m high and 124 m long dam wall dams the water of the Sihl river here. With an area of 10.72 km², the Sihlsee is the largest reservoir in Switzerland in terms of surface area. Einsiedeln is best known for the monastery located here and its Black Madonna. The monastery is a stop on the Way of St. James.
